“You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally by the time you are real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all; because once you are real you can’t ever be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” Velveteen Rabbit

the show must go on...

this past Thursday afternoon, after a fun day at the pool and some yummy homemade ice cream cookie sandwiches, we stopped briefly at a playground while I was speaking to a dear friend of mine. The next thing I know, Maxwell is screaming his head off. Apparently, as he was at the top of the slide, a wasp came along and stung him on his lower eye lid. The wasp had impeccable aim.

It was Max's first time to be stung by anything, so as I waited to see if he would have an allergic reaction, I settled in with the fact that his eye/face was going to swell up like a balloon.

The only thing I could really do for it was to give him Benadryl every six hours and put a cold compress on it. The incident was untimely because Maxwell had been attending a camp all week called Summer Show Offs. They learned a musical review and Friday was their big performance. The picture above was taken Friday morning, so you can imagine Max's apprehension about performing given he could barely open his left eye.

He was a champ. I dropped him off at rehearsal and told him to walk confidently in and just tell people, "I got into a fight with a wasp, and the wasp won". I was and am so proud of him for pushing through it. Below are some pictures taken at the performance.

It was a wonderful day. As someone wise said to me at the start of the day. Life is about adversity and accepting that nothing ever goes as planned. It was a great teachable moment for Max, and I am proud of him for being courageous. Max made his momma proud.
